Leon Bates

Leon Bates: 1949-2025

Renowned pianist, lifelong Philadelphian, and longtime Trustee of The Presser Foundation Leon Bates passed away on November 21, 2025. As a child growing up in Germantown, Bates showed talent as early as age 6, later attending both Settlement Music School and Temple University. For more than five decades, he performed across the world, dazzling audiences with characteristic skill and stamina. He performed in more than 10 concerts with The Philadelphia Orchestra from 1970-2002, played in three performances for Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, and taught master classes at Temple University. His versatile performances championed works by Black composers alongside beloved repertoire from Rachmaninoff and Liszt.

For 18 years, Bates also served on the Foundation’s Board of Trustees, sharing his knowledge and deep insights with Board and Committee meetings. A valued member of the Assistance to Music Teachers and Capital Support Committees, Bates brought not only music expertise, but a charismatic and warm presence.

“Leon Bates was a valued member of the Presser Foundation board for decades.  He was a gifted concert pianist whose performances and improvisational ability delighted audiences throughout his celebrated career. Despite a formidable schedule of appearances nationally and internationally, he was a dedicated teacher and also served the cause of philanthropy through his work with our board. Many will remember his resonant and rich speaking voice from his work as a radio host over the years. It was always a pleasure to work with Leon, and we at The Presser Foundation were deeply saddened when, due to illness, he resigned after such a distinguished period of service.  We extend our condolences to his family and friends as well as to his many students.” Jeffrey Cornelius, Honorary Trustee, President of the Board 2017 – 2023.

To honor Bates and his service to music, the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society presented a performance titled “Bernstein, Bates, & Friends” which featured more than a dozen musicians who Bates mentored or collaborated with throughout his career. These highly regarded musicians performed music by Bernstein, Walker, Lefebvre, Ives, and Gershwin, many of Bates’ favorites. It was supported by the Foundation and attended by many Foundation Trustees and staff.

The Presser Foundation mourns his passing while celebrating the impact of Leon Bates – internationally, nationally, and in our own music community.
