Next in the series is Peter Burwasser, a semi-retired businessman and an avid writer.
Background & Career: Burwasser’s love for music began early on. With a grandfather who studied opera at the Odessa Conservatory and a brother who is a professional musician, Burwasser’s connection to music runs deep.
As a history major at the University of Pennsylvania, he became involved with the radio station WXPN, which provided a platform to explore music of all genres. After graduating, he wrote for Philadelphia City Paper, mostly about classical music, as well as other publications including The Philadelphia Inquirer and Philly Music Makers.
While he spent his career in business, he has always had a passion for music.
Music Involvement: While Burwasser has played the piano since childhood, he enjoys listening to music more – particularly to new music and to classical music at The Philadelphia Orchestra and the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society.
How did he learn about The Presser Foundation?: Burwasser’s introduction to The Presser Foundation came from past Trustee and President Robert Capanna, who had also introduced him to the Musical Fund Society (of which Burwasser is a past President).
Role at the Foundation: Special Projects Committee Chair, Advancement of Music Committee, Nominating & Governance Committee
What he enjoys & favorite memory of being on the Board: For Burwasser, the most rewarding aspect of being on the Board lies in the opportunity to give back. He particularly likes seeing new organizations that feature contemporary composers being funded.
He has also enjoyed his time as the Special Projects Committee Chair, specifically in being mentored in the role by previous chair Vera Wilson.
Impact of the Foundation: “People know that the Foundation is here (in Philadelphia) and it can help.”
Future of the Foundation: The Foundation will continue a “long overdue” focus on DEI while remaining true to its mission.
What does he do in his free time?: He enjoys listening to and playing music, writing, including regularly contributing to Fanfare and The Absolute Sound magazines, cooking, and being involved with the Musical Fund Society.
